They performed two 3-minute submaximal treadmill exercise blocks in a wheelchair. SETTING: Eight rehabilitation centers in the Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-two people with (in)complete paraplegia and tetraplegia. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mechanical efficiency values were calculated for each block. The course of mechanical efficiency was investigated using test occasions (t1 -t3), completeness and level (paraplegia or tetraplegia) of the lesion, and power output as independent variables in a multilevel regression analysis. RESULTS: Mechanical efficiency significantly increased between t1 and t2 only. After adding level and completeness of the lesion and their interactions with time to the model, block 2 showed that subjects with paraplegia had a significantly higher mechanical efficiency than subjects with tetraplegia. Subjects with tetraplegia improved more between t1 and t2 . CONCLUSIONS: Results showed a significant improvement in mechanical efficiency during the first 3 months of active rehabilitation. Subjects with paraplegia showed a higher mechanical efficiency than did subjects with tetraplegia, whereas the latter showed more improvement between t1 and t2 .

Outcome measures were reaction time (RT), movement time (MT), and driving accuracy (DA). RESULTS: The IJ with FSA had a significantly shorter RT than the MSJ (P < 0.0020). The IJ with FSA had a significantly longer MT than the MSJ to far targets (P < 0.0159). No differences were found between the IJ with VGA and the MSJ with respect to RT or MT. No differences in DA were found among any of the joysticks. CONCLUSIONS: VGA software allowed the IJ to function similarly to the MSJ with respect to RT, MT, and DA.

DESIGN: Fifteen manual wheelchair users with tetraplegia completed a 4-wk protocol including a 2-wk trial where they used their personal wheelchairs for mobility and a 2-wk trial where they were provided with a PAPAW and could choose either wheelchair for mobility. The mobility levels with both wheelchairs were recorded by a datalogger. Participants completed daily questionnaires regarding community participation and medical scooters their satisfaction with the wheelchair used. The Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale was used to compare the psychosocial impact of PAPAWs with their personal wheelchairs. RESULTS: Participants chose to use PAPAWs and their personal wheelchairs at a similar frequency in the PAPAW trial. The distances traveled with both wheelchairs were not statistically different (P = 0.09). Participants traveled significantly faster with PAPAWs (P = 0.03). PAPAWs did not result in significantly greater community participation, satisfaction, and psychosocial impacts than the personal wheelchairs. CONCLUSIONS: PAPAWs could be a viable mobility option for individuals with tetraplegia, which can provide independent mobility especially for outdoor activities. A user’s preference, life style, physical conditions, transportation issues, and environmental factors should be considered in prescribing such a device.
